Lytechinus variegatus, aka the pincushion or collector urchin gets its name from its short spines and its desire to collect small rocks and shells on its back to camouflage from predators. Ours have been with us awhile and are very hardy. While most are known to be nocturnal, coming out at night to graze on algae, ours are frequently moving throughout the day carrying their hats around. If you have a thick hair algae patch these guys can clean it up within a day or so! WYSIWYG
